New Jersey to Expand Its Offering of AP African-American Studies

Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) says New Jersey will stand on the side of teaching “our full history.” Senior Editor James R. Sanders reports.

New Jersey plans to expand its Advanced Placement African-American courses in a decision that came down from its democratic Governor Phil Murphy on Tuesday.

This expansion will affect 26 schools. Currently in the garden state, the course is only being taught at one school. Gov. Murphy says, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is prioritizing “political culture wars” over academics.

DeSantis has been critical of the course, and stated in the press that it holds no value.

In a statement to the press, Gov. Murphy said, “New Jersey will proudly teach our kids that Black History is American History.” Murphy added, “While the DeSantis Administration stated that AP African American Studies ‘significantly lacks educational value’, New Jersey will stand on the side of teaching our full history.”

According to NBC News, “The courses have begun in 60 schools nationwide as part of a two-year pilot phase and are set to expand to hundreds next year.”
