REVIEW: NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FW23 | Sergio Hudson

The 90’s are back…again!

90’s fashion has made its comeback in the form of trends on the runway fashion and street style. How could it not with its whimsical designs, flirty silhouettes and vivid colors?

When looking at runway collections from the 1990’s it reminds you how fun fashion can actually be. All the elements that fashion from the 90’s can bring was everything that the Sergio Hudson Fall 2023 RTW collection brought to the runway during fashion month.

After being inspired by a kaleidoscope mural that was created by award winning artist Jason Naylor, he reached out to him via Instagram to request a collaboration for his next collection and the rest was history. Not only did the duo work on graffiti-inspired typography that’s featured on a tee’s that would be paired with suiting but the neon color palette was also inspired by Naylor’s signature color style using neon pinks, greens and electrifying blues. Some of the inspiration that could be seen from this collection is 90’s films and sitcoms.

From style icons such as Cher Horowitz of Clueless, Hilary Banks of the Fresh Prince and of course the style maven herself Fran Fine of The Nanny, each garment of this collection takes cues from style legends of 90’s media that still have our social media and closets in a chokehold.

Other highlights from this collection were the highlighter-hued tweed suits, dresses with skin-baring cutouts, and cinched pencil skirts. I also lived for the cropped tailored blazers and the decisions for the models to wear high ponytails because who doesn’t love a good high ponytail.

The direction of this collection was definitely geared towards Generation Z and their love for vintage fashion trends and style. Hudson goes on to explain to Vogue magazine how the youth is inspiring his new fashion direction stating, “I feel like younger girls are inspiring me right now.” Hudson goes on to say “Like my oldest step-daughter or my niece. Even just girls you see on Instagram and they’re wearing these beautiful vintage clothes. It speaks to me. And I wanted to speak back to them.”

When looking at this collection I get the same feeling as I did when I look at runway shows from Patrick Kelly or even Todd Oldham, fashion is supposed to be fun and add some pizzazz to your own personal style. With so much darkness surrounding the world and style these days, the Sergio Hudson Fall 2023 Ready to Wear collection was right on time to add some light to both our lives and closets.
