In 2016, Turner was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. A year later, she received a kidney transplant.

Tina Turner’s voice was undeniable and had attached to hits such as: hits including “The Best,” “Proud Mary,” “Private Dancer,” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” Her entry into the music industry came through her husband Ike Turner. The two were a duo — Ike and Tina and were a major force in R&B with such hits as, “Proud Mary,” “A Fool in Love” and “Nutbush City Limits.”

In a statement from a representative: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee. She sang in the church choir like most singers from her era. As a teen, she was discovered by Ike Turner during a live performance with his band when he famously passed the mic to her, and she wowed the crowd with her big voice.

The two married and then divorced after a tumultuous relationship that involved physical and emotional divorce.

“My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker,” Turner wrote in her 2018 biography My Love Story. “He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so I could never leave him.”

In the 80s, 90s, and 00s Tina was active as a performer — touring, recording, and appearing everywhere. She changed the face of Rock and Roll and resurged her career which many said would be over after her divorce from Ike Turner.

Her story of resilience is as impactful as her voice.
