‘He didn’t fall off he just ain’t release his new sh*t.’ Well, the break is over and what we’ve all been waiting for was worth it
Always breaking boundaries and changing the game, Lil Nas X’s debut album Montero establishes the singer as a superstar.
Following up one of the biggest songs in recent years is no easy feat. Old Town Road is a legendary hit, and it would have been easy to become a one hit wonder after an experience like that. However, he did everything but that, releasing a great EP titled 7, and now a great debut album.
Montereo, named after the singer, is an album that is bold, fun, emotional and full of bops.
The album starts with one of his most recent chart topping hits, MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), which is one of my personal favorites. If this song and music video, which had people in shambles, told us anything about what was the come, it was that Lil Nas X was going to be bold and unapologetic about telling his story; as he should be.
The following track, Dead Right Now, is another one of my favorites from the album. It gives the listener an inside look into the singer’s experience with his family during his rise to fame.
I don’t need to say much about Industry Baby, it’s a hit and he did not have to go off so hard but I’m grateful that he did. Jack Harlow added his magic to this track and made it perfect.
We go on to hear songs that touch on Lil Nas X’s relationships, his sexuality, and his time in the music industry thus far. The duality of the artist shows with songs like Sun Goes Down and Life After Salem. What I love about Lil Nas X’s previous project is that he experimented a lot with different genres. We hear that again on this album and it’s one of its major strengths.
Let’s talk about the other features on the album. Scoop with Doja Cat is no doubt one of the best tracks. Everything Doja Cat touches turns to gold. Hot girl Megan Thee Stallion killed it on Dolla Sign Slime, and Miley Cyrus and Elton John added special touches with their respective features on Am I Dreaming and One of Me.
Overall, the album is a continuation of the artist’s self expression and a showcase of his talents. If you haven’t listened already, you’re missing out.
